Quantum accelerator

From Transistors to Qubits

  • Computer technology is based on transistors, and we are very close to the end of the famous Moore’s law.
  • Moore was one of the founders of Intel and predicted that the number of transistors doubles almost every 2 years.
  • That evolution is coming to an end as we are now at the 2-nanometer size of a single transistor.

QBee Mission

A small history of QBee
10 years ago, one of the founders of QBee started working on quantum computing in Delft and managed to land the US-based company, Intel. They wanted  to develop a first tentative quantum chip. There was also an intensive collaboration with the superconducting team in Delft and that led to a relatively large quantum chip of more than 30 qubits.

QBee’s founders have been active in quantum computing for 10 years

Where the world is

  • Classical computers are built with CMOS-transistors. The current size of CMOS transistors is 2 nanometer.
  • There is a clear technology stop to building even more powerful supercomputers as we can not scale down the transistors anymore.
  • Quantum bits, called Qubits, are a realistic alternative to make even more powerful computers for the many world problems we have to solve

From NISQ to PISQ

  • Experimental physics focuses on NISQ, Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum computing aspects. Many fundamental challenges still need to be resolved, for example, narrowing down on the quantum technology that can be used to make a scalable quantum processor.
  • There is also an increasing need for PISQ, Perfect Intermediate-Scale Quantum computing.
  • Quantum logic will have a profound effect on all scientific and industrial fields.
  • Universities will have to train and educate people to understand the quantum effects for any scientific field.
  • Companies need to start building quantum-competent teams such that quantum-based solutions can be developed.

QBee’s contribution

  • Quantum accelerator – based on the full-stack that is now adopted by many big players in the quantum field
  • Perfect qubits – application logic needs to be formulated in terms of perfect qubits

Quantum Technology

QBee has defined the full stack for a quantum accelerator. It starts at the application layer and, as a company, focuses on Quantum Genetics and Quantum Chemistry.   Any application is then executed by different, fully integrated layers such as the programming language, the micro-architecture up to the quantum simulator.

Logic and programming

QBee has now moved to the public domain platform, called Qiskit.

+

Micro-Architecture

The entire micro-architecture controls the execution of any application on the quantum accelerator.

+

Simulator

The QBeeSim simulator computes the new amplitudes for the intermediate qubit states.

+

The PISQ-vision

The QBee philosophy is based on the PISQ-vision.

  • PISQ stands for Perfect Intermediate-Scale Quantum
  • This complementary to the Quantum Hardware vision which is named NISQ, where ‘N’ stands for Noisy,
  • and the noisy challenges are fundamentally different for various technologies like superconducting, ion traps or photonics qubits.

Q Application

The research described here was among the first few to explore the applications of quantum computing in bioinformatics. There exists a considerable technological readiness gap between the resource requirements of realistic quantum algorithms and available physical quantum processors. Thus, most developments in QC algorithms are agnostics to hardware developments and focuses on theoretical proofs of advantages in terms of computational resources.Discover more
